Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) is a white crystalline oxide of zirconium. It is usually called as zirconia in industries. It is one of the most studied and used ceramic materials. It has excellent physical characteristics and unique chemical properties. It has three phases: Monoclinic below 1170 °C, Tetragonal between 1170 °C and 2370 °C and Cubic above 2370 °C.


ZrO2 adopts a monoclinic crystal structure at room temperature and will transition to tetragonal and cubic at higher temperatures. The mostly popular using case of zirconia is that of tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (TZP), which is indicative of polycrystalline zirconia composed of only metastable tetragonal phase. When zirconia is blended with yttria additives (3.5 percentage in mol weight), the tetragonal phase is metastable stabilized to room temperatures, which could result in transformation toughening.

The zirconia with yttria stabilized usually is called Y-TZP zirconia.
